10 Confessions of a Low-Maintenance Fashionista
Stylish and beautiful people rule my Instagram feed. And it’s inspiring — I see places I would really like to go and seems I would love to try.
But all of us have those other days. When you’re feeling like the only woman in the world who forgets deodorant and spends the afternoon concealing the times sweat stains. Or, who occasionally ventures out with no –gasp! –a perfect blush on lips of color. On those days, your amazingly beautiful IG feed starts to feel oppressive and condescending.
For those days, a dose of truth is in order. Since no one is forever photo-ready. Here are 10 confessions from this low-maintenance fashionista. And, consider yourself warned: Number 9 is rather embarrassing.
1. Wearing the Same Thing Thrice
Same pants!
I buy shoes, clothing and accessories based on value. And in vogue, value has a simple definition: what does it cost me and how many times will I wear it?
This”price per wear” strategy clashes with that old thought that girls should not be seen wearing the identical piece twice. I don’t know where that idea came out, but can we please do away with it? I enjoy wearing my clothes .
Additionally, discovering new ways to combine and match what is in my cupboard to make outfits that are new is enjoyable. Where is the challenge in restocking with new things?
2. That can be Yesterday’s Hair
I have fine, thin hair and I am paranoid about breakage and hair loss. So, I try to have as many days from a single blow-dry (or even flatiron) as you can.
And yes, there’s a shower cap and dry shampoo involved in this strategy. Nordstrom sells shower caps for $16, but I am now using one I got for free. Right?
3. Jeans Rut Pride
In the warmer months, you may say I fall to the jeans . Skinny jeans, to be precise. However, you know what? I really don’t care. I enjoy wearing denim. It goes with everything and it is generally flattering. And I am getting from those jeans!
It’s only a rut if you’d like to escape it?
4. Joggers, without Jogging
I use my Fabletics joggers beyond the house, when I’m not jogging. To be clear, I don’t typically wear them just like a Kardashian, with pumps and a cardigan. I use them with Nike Frees and a t-shirt.
That which I wear on a day that is given is largely about what I am doing that day. I will put on something that’s not stylish in the traditional sense When it is a sporty kind daily, then yeah. I’m likely to bring a fantastic pair of sunglasses to the mix — but I will leave the pumps aside for another day.
5. Two Sweaty Hobbies
I operate and I ride my horse. The horse-riding specifically is a sweaty avocation. As of now, I am composing this post in a pair of a top that is running and shorts. My hair’s a mess. I think I’ve horse slobber.
Most of us have our messier minutes. These moments don’t define our sense of our rating on the beauty scale.
6. No Clothes Left Behind
Traditional wisdom tells us to toss stuff you have not worn in a year, however, I just can’t do it. Clothes really don’t throw away unless they’re ruined. I have a handful of gowns that I’ve had for many, many years. Some years they are worn by me and I do not some years.
For getting lots of wear from my 11, my key? I mainly buy styles, although I dabble at the season’s trends. This has gotten easier as I’ve gotten older. Rather than being a servant to what is sexy these days wearing what I need, I am more comfortable.
7. Hats all Day
It is likely because the hair of yesterday isn’t exercising, if you find me wearing a hat. I use a painters cap pretty regularly (especially if I just got off my horse and have helmet hair), but I’ve also got hats of this floppy, Panama, bucket and newsboy variety.
8. No Spas
I do not visit the spa. I have not in years. The cost of it never really seems warranted. As long as I can still see, I’ll be plucking my eyebrows and providing myself facials. I really do enjoy a, as I get, but that’s about as self-indulgent.
9. Arm Hair
A manicurist told me I should wax them and that I have hairy arms. I declined to take her advice. Way too much upkeep for my taste. I will take hair in my arms over bumps and stubble.
10. Love-Hate into Shop
Do not inform any style that is other bloggers this, however I’ve a love/hate relationship with shopping. I really like to shop when I know exactly what I want. I have a list, I go to the store, and that I try things on. I check for vouchers on my phone, find stuff that works, and finish the purchase. Mission accomplished.
I hate shopping to pass the time. Recreational shopping ends up being costly. In the spirit of finishing the trip, you buy. It looks terrible on your cupboard and adorable in the store.
There’s a simple solution though. Keep a list of accessories and clothes that will fill gaps in your attire. This way, when your mother-in-law invites you out shopping, you’re ready disciplined and to be focused about what you purchase. It is good for me!
If you are still with me, you wanting you had the last five minutes of your life back — or you are feeling just a little camaraderie for an low-maintenance and imperfect fashionista. I hope it is the latter!
