Flashback Fashion to Wear Clogs

collage of four outfits with clogs

In 2009, Lindsey wrote into us to inquire: here is a challenge. Can you do an article about the best way best to wear Dansko clogs with some pictures? I have got plantar fasciitis and that I hear these shoes can help. I have a couple, but I’m uncertain how to design them. Help!

Our 2009 Answer: Lindsey, here is the short answer to your question. The trick to staying trendy while rockin’ clogs is to maintain equilibrium. Clogs add mass to the bottom half of your body, which means you need to balance your upper half with a trendy coat or announcement necklace.

Another crucial style tip is to set your clogs with tights (please, for the interest of all that is good in the world, DO NOT wear them with nylons or bare legged), and you can even go a little bold with the color or pattern. Just keep in mind that if you go extreme with pattern or colour, you may get a kindergartener vibe.

Fast forward to 2017, and we stand by our 8-year-old advice. However, we’d love to bring a depth to the clog dialog. And the first point is that: how the hell did clogs turned into a style statement anyhow?

Brief History of Clogs in Fashion

A clog is defined by the dictionary as a shoe having a thick one. In practice, a clog is usually backless and contains a sole. Clogs were chosen by the style hints back to 14th century Scandinavia — for centuries afterwards for comfort and protection.

The shoe that is clunky wooden did not become a fashion piece, however, until the 20th century. Wikipedia reports that clogs started their increase in the’70s and’80s, when both women and men beginning wearing them thanks to the wildly popular Swedish pop group ABBA.

2007 Viktor & Rolf Ready-to-Wear

Once they seemed at Viktor & Rolf’s 2007 Ready-to-Wear collection, clogs stepped into the fashion spotlight. These designs featured colours and complex patterns. My guess is if the versions had not been sporting metal frames and spotlights, they could have stolen the show.

Chanel SS 2010

The shoe that was quirky obtained yet another designer endorsement that was prominent in 2010. Contemporary clogs anchored chanel’s 2010 designers with thick buckles platform heels and metal stud details. This style has since been reproduced by the masses, to the point every spring at which you can find variations at Payless.

Styling Clogs Now

Clogs today have two types of groupies. First are the people like Lindsey who need to show their toes some love. Second are trend superfans who dream.

When this post went in 2009, we gave Lindsey two costume options. Both consisted of adorable jackets, tights, skirts and, of course, the clogs.

We’ll go another step These days. I scoured for the best clog outfits I could find in the web and coordinated them all at a Pinterest plank for you.

As you can see, there is no magic to wearing clogs. You could…

  • Pair them using a simple summer dress to play down their edgy quality.
  • Blend a sandal style clog with a  looser top if they feel overly clunky.
  • Go retro and put a scarf on your own hair and cuff your panties.
  • Catch the clogs on a lazy day and use these to style up a fundamental jeans-and-t outfit.
