Looking Great for Your Age — Why It’s Not a Good Thing (Sponsored)

You look great. It’s supposed to be a compliment, I guess. However, what if somebody told you,”you look great for your weight,” or”to your elevation?” Why does anything else, or era, want to qualify how great you look?
Language is a funny thing, also. Because I would bet that folks who distribute the backhanded”to the age” compliment have the greatest intentions. They’re definitely not people. But somewhere along the way, they have absorbed the (fairly common) belief that beauty fades with age. And the”to the age” flattery, once spoken, perpetuates that thought.
What’s your take on”to your age” compliments? You’re not alone, if you find them bothersome. RoC Skincare recently conducted a nationwide survey with Wakefield Research to uncover how the bemused flattery is really felt about by women over 40. Turns out, most women would prefer no glow over an age-qualified one. Insights in the study include:
- Girls are told that they look good”for their era” typically every six weeks at yesteryear
- 88% of New York girls ages 40+’ve now been told they seem”great due to their age” in the past year. They are the compliment.
- More than 60 percent of girls have altered their behaviour after being advised that their actions weren’t”age-appropriate”
- But 88% refuse to conform to societal standards set for women their age.
Flipping the Script on”For The Age” Compliments
Wouldn’t it be amazing if we can change the conversation if women over 40 could be amazing, powerful, daring and great, period? I wonder how it would go down if we elderly ladies just started yelling at any utterance of the”to your age” term. A new sort of compliment might surface, something like,”you are so calm for your age” Hmm. Maybe not the ideal outcome. Scratch this strategy.
Instead, let’s create consciousness about the negativity inserted in those backhanded compliments. Share of getting modified with #ForYourAge your examples. We can inspire a positive dialogue and begin defining beauty on our own provisions.
