Struggling in Style: The Hunger Games Fishtail Braid

Got what it takes to endure The Hunger Games? Sure, you may have the agility, strength, and smarts, but can you keep up? AHEM! We’re referring to Katniss Everdeen’s (played by Jennifer Lawrence) oh-so-practical, yet stylish fishtail braid. If you want to head to opening night in style, you’ve got to try this. Farouk Systems creative artist Danielle Bucco-Regazzi says that the hairstyles in this movie will influence trends for the year, so we’re assuming it’s a must see. Here is a step-by-step tutorial so that you understand just how to achieve the fishtail braid.

How to Do a Fishtail Braid

A Few Tips: It helps to prep your hair using a bit of styling gel. A slight wave can make the braid more organic. And, as with the majority of braids, it helps to have long hair. Even you short haired fashionistas can attempt this on a small scale. Here is how to do it:

Step 1: Collect Your Own Hair Into The Side

Gather Your Hair to the Side

Many braids curl on your shoulder, so moving it will allow you to get it started. Another perk is that your arms will not get tired while it is created by you.

Step 2: Split Your Own Hair Into Two Sections

This is not likely to be your braid, as you would start with three as evidenced by the 2 segments.

Step 3: Catch a Sheet of Hair From The Outside

Grab A Piece of Hair From The Outside

Hold both sections in one hand as and then use your other hand to grab a small piece of hair and deliver it over to section two.

Step 4: Maintain Moving

Keep Going

Continue by doing the opposite, attracting hair out of the outside of section 2 and bringing it over to section one (It’s going to be like a braid in reverse.)

Measure 5: Work Your Way Down

Keep braiding down all of the way.
